I recently noticed a new feature after opening AutoCAD Web App, a new preview feature of a Trace feature. The new Trace feature works great for non-destructive overlays for markup and edits that don't alter the original drawing. Introducing Trace (preview feature) “Trace provides a safe space to add changes to a drawing in the web and mobile apps without altering the existing drawing. To open the Trace palette, click Traces in the side panel on the left side of... Read more →

17! Seventeen years ago I started this blog as a fun side project after a couple Autodesk employees Bill Johnson and Eric Wright approached me about this new thing called Blogs, and I have been throwing words and photos up here ever since. Next year the blog will be 18 years old, and I will have to consider if I am kicking it out of the house since it will be an adult if it were human. Thank you to... Read more →

Sixteen years ago tomorrow I started this blog as a fun side project after a couple Autodesk employees Bill Johnson and Eric Wright approached me about this new thing called Blogs and I have been throwing words and photos up here ever since. Its amazing since my daughter just turned 18 and this blog started when she was barely two years old. I need to think about what I'm going to say on the Sweet Sixteen anniversary of a blog... Yesterday I had the pleasure of speaking with a panel of Smithsonian employees of the Digitization Program Office and they let me know of an amazing reality capture project that went live just yesterday. It is stunning in detail and fascinating information. You can also download the 3D model data and then 3D print your own although at a smaller than life size. I have been really impressed with the new launched AutoCAD Web App that is included with the AutoCAD 2019 and AutoCAD LT 2019 subscription. I have been using it today on a bunch of drawings to kick the tires. There is nothing to download or install, just launch your web browser and go to https://web.autocad.com/ and log in. Not only can you view and edit drawings, but you can create new drawings using the same AutoCAD DNA as the desktop... Read more →

Yes, back in the late 90s there was a creepy Dancing Baby “Baby Cha Cha” that seemed to be all the rage on the young growing Internet. Jon Bell a colleague here in the Autodesk Lake Oswego office has been involved with the Autodesk 3d Max /3D Studio teams since the early beginnings and was able to find the source file for me. I just finished moving this week into the SW Hills area of Portland and wanted to pass on a great free resource to those living in the US. Some of my Autodesk colleagues sent me into a daytime nightmare feeling simply with a URL to a web page in my email. On the web page in Google Chrome of browser with WebGL you see a 3D shaded head model and as you move you curser the model updates. Slovakian 3D artist Lukáš Hajka developed the shaders and in my opinion a 3D model with this amount of realism is crossing the uncanny valley and truly convinces you it... Read more →
