The Focus Four: What Really Hurts People on a Job Site
09 May 2025
There’s a lot that can go wrong on a construction site. But four hazards account for most of the serious injuries and deaths. OSHA calls them the “Focus Four.” I call them the stuff you don’t ignore.
Let’s break it down.
1. Falls
Still the #1 killer. Not always the big dramatic ones, either. Could be a slip on a slick walkway, falling off a ladder, or missing a step on scaffolding.
Fix it: Wear your harness. Set your rails. Keep walkways clean. It’s basic stuff -and it saves lives.
2. Struck-By
Anything moving, spinning, dropping, or flying can ruin your day. Think tools falling off a lift, backing trucks, or debris shot out by a saw.
Fix it: Wear high-vis. Stay alert. Flag the zone. Watch your surroundings like your life depends on it -because it does.
3. Caught-In or Between
Machines. Trenches. Steel. All can crush, trap, or pin you. This one’s fast and brutal.
Fix it: Use trench boxes. Respect lockout/tagout. Give moving equipment space. Never assume it’s off or they see you.
4. Electrical
It’s not just the electricians. A cheap cord in a puddle can take you out. Temporary setups are everywhere -don’t trust them blindly.
Fix it: Test before you touch. Know what’s live. Use GFCIs. Respect electricity.
Bottom Line
These aren’t rare accidents. They’re the common ones. The ones that happen too often. And every single one is preventable.
Do the simple things right -every time.
