Lightweight Visualizations Using NeRF Neural Radiance Fields

This past week, I flew a UAS (drone) and captured orbiting video of the new Central Library at Stevens Ranch - Deschutes Public Library under construction here in Bend Oregon. I generated a low res interactive 3D model and cool video using a new technology called NeRf. I used Luma3D to use NeRF to produce a 3D point could and meshed model.

NeRF (Neural Radiance Fields) results in a 3D model creation in my case using Luma AI (Luma 3D app) Luma AI and NeRF is a cutting-edge technology that turns regular photos or videos into detailed, realistic 3D models using artificial intelligence.

From Neural radiance field - Wikipedia
”A neural radiance field (NeRF) is a method based on deep learning for reconstructing a three-dimensional representation of a scene from two-dimensional images. The NeRF model enables downstream applications of novel view synthesis, scene geometry reconstruction, and obtaining the reflectance properties of the scene. Additional scene properties such as camera poses may also be jointly learned. First introduced in 2020,[1] it has since gained significant attention for its potential applications in computer graphics and content creation.

How It Works (Simplified):
  1. Capture – Much like photogrammetry techniques, you take a video (or multiple photos) of an object, scene, or space from different angles using a smartphone, camera, or a drone aerial camera.
  2. AI Processing – Luma AI uses NeRF (Neural Radiance Fields), a deep learning technique that analyzes the images, understands depth, lighting, and texture, and reconstructs the subject in 3D.
  3. 3D Model Output – The result is a highly detailed, photorealistic 3D model that can be viewed, rotated, and even used in applications like VR, gaming, and digital design.

Benefits:
  • Ultra-Realistic – Captures fine details, reflections, and lighting effects that traditional 3D scanning methods struggle with.
  • No Special Equipment Needed – Unlike traditional photogrammetry, which requires precise conditions and high-end cameras, NeRF works with just a smartphone.
  • Fast & Automated – AI does the heavy lifting, making 3D model creation quicker and easier than manual 3D modeling.

Use Cases:
  • Virtual Reality & Gaming – Bringing real-world objects into digital spaces.
  • E-commerce – Creating 3D product models for online stores.
  • Architecture & Real Estate – Scanning interiors or exteriors for virtual tours and walk throughs.
  • Construction – Creating a quick project update showing the overview of the construction site whether an aerial like I did or and interior view like installing HVAC or process equipment allowing others to look around interactively.
  • VFX & Film – Generating digital assets.

In short, Luma AI’s NeRF technology makes 3D model creation more accessible, faster, and more photorealistic than ever, all from just a simple video on your phone. You can export GLTF, OBJ, USDZ, UE, SPLAT, PLY. This allows many uses of the data including instant AR in your iPhone using the USDZ file.
