We tend to over-react here in Portland when it snows or there is freezing ice storms, but for some good reasons. We normally don't get snow, or just a trace then it melts. In the past 3 winters we have seen more than just a trace.
Snow or ice storms tend to slow or bring the city to a standstill because don't laugh but we have only a couple snow plows and our roads with hills are not designed for the snow or ice build up. To make matters even more difficult, we don't allow road salt and have a bunch of new Oregon transplants that have never driven in snow. Growing up in heavy snow of Idaho, I can definitely drive but the concern is all those that cannot and panic and stomp on their brakes and slide across lanes or worse they just abandon their vehicles in the road and walk home. I live at the top of a steep hill with a road that is a straight shot down into a high school football field and the thought of sliding and gaining speed down the hill and launching into a high school football field is not a good one. So I am awaiting all this snow and ice to melt before venturing out.
So today I am working from my office at home, and enjoying the snowy view.
I'm convinced this freak snow storm was the result of the nice weather the past month that was giving me a bad case of spring fever, even mowing the lawn two weeks ago. Come on spring!
Cheers,
Shaan
