Capturing Building Exteriors In 3D - Reality Computing Webinar Series

Capturing Building Exteriors In 3D

On May 7th, 2015 a small team of us descended on the city of Atlanta Georgia to perform some research comparing terrestrial laser scanning of the exterior of a building to the results of photogrammetry using UAV and  ReCap 360 and then the combined model from both processes. Comparisons of the data looked at the accuracy and tolerances in both methods as well as the combined results which as you can guess is twice as good and neither was uniquely superior in all respects as they actually compliment each other very well..

The research project  team included Autodesk and partners Repro Products and GeoSurvey.

Project Team:

Repro Products

Zoltan Ferenczy

GeoSurvey

Trenton D. Turk Bradley Cash

Autodesk

Mike Gemmell   Shaan Hurley  Dennis Martin  Dominique Pouliquen

On June 12, 2015 the results were presented in a webinar that was recorded and posted to YouTube. The webinar covers some of the equipment and methods we used to generate the 3D dataset of the building as well as answers some key questions and some best practices..

  • Do you need to capture building exteriors?
  • What should you use to do it?
  • Laser scanning? Photo modeling? Both?
  • Compare the resulting photo-based 3D data from several camera types
  • Compare the accuracy between laser and photo-based point clouds

Autodesk Presenters:
Dominique Pouliquen – Marketing Director
Eric Richie – Customer Success Manager
