Recently I was pointed to a Yahoo video interview which featured Roderick Romero of Romero Studios who is a designer and builder of high-end tree houses or as he referred to them as “Human Nests”. The tree houses are not the stereotypical tree house you remember as a kid. These designs and constructions are a blend of art, creativity, sculpture, sustainable materials, design, and skillful craftsmanship. The Yahoo SecondAct series - Real stories celebrating life, passion, and reinvention. Yes you can make your own Steampunk goggles "N-Axis" thanks to the amazing Autodesk community site Instructables and member gogglerman http://bit.ly/rm5fFi . Really, no self respecting Steampunk fan should be without their cool Steampunk style goggles without feeling overwhelming embarrassment. Now instead of paying over $200 at the Makers Faire for a pair already made I can make my own and have enough money leftover to make a Steampunk hat, jacket, arm mounted ray gun, and ornate nickel tipped boots. A few weeks ago I held a Google+ Hangout a casual live webcam and audio discussion with some Autodesk Labs Project Photofly technology preview users. One of the requests from that discussions was to please create a wiki so all tips, tricks and known issues could be found in one place. We now have Photofly Wiki for everyone to share their collective knowledge of Photofly and tips, tricks, and pitfalls Read more →

You may not have heard or even been aware of this new partnership with earthmine, or perhaps know what is earthmine. While visiting the Autodesk office in San Francisco recently I chatted with Justin Lokitz who is not only one of the best home brewers of beer, but also the Product Manager for AutoCAD Map 3D, AEC Infrastructure Modeling. Justin mentioned what earthmine was and the availability of the new product extension for AutoCAD Map 3D and then the earthmine CEO Anthony Fassero demonstrated the technology live. Read more →

In eight years of blogging I have received several questions on AutoCAD on this blog in comments and tried to answer each one. There is not real formal method to ask a question that is not related to a specific topic of a specific blog post and some have posted their questions to random other post comments. It is for this reason I am experimenting with a Open Mic post for AutoCAD & Autodesk Labs related questions or perhaps just a general comment about this blog, me, my hair, you looking for a job, or the upcoming Autodesk University. I received my October 2011 copy of Wired Magazine and to my delight both Autodesk Labs Project Photofly and the Autodesk Gallery were in this issue. On page 68 there is a full page story on Autodesk on Reality Capture covering the free technology preview Project Photofly. Project Photofly converts photos taken with your digital camera to 3D models. Read more →

The AutoCAD User Experience Team is hosting its annual AutoCAD Sneak Peek events in late September and early October. These are free half-day events held in a few different locations, and they’re a great way to get hands-on experience with in-progress features and give your suggestions and feedback directly to the team designing those features. This year the team is running two events that focus on different functionality. Read more →
