HellFire 13 on the Bonneville Salt Flats
31 July 2008
I am taking most of the day off Friday to attend the HellFire 13 rocket launch event on the world famous Bonneville Salt Flats which are about 80 miles to the West of where I live in Salt Lake City. This will be the 13th annual event so I hope nobody is superstitious. This should be quite a experience in the 100F+ degree heat surrounded by nothing but flat white salt and people launching up to 200+ pound rockets to altitudes exceeding 25,000 feet. I think it might be wise if you have a airline flight from say San Francisco to Denver in the next 3 days to mention to your pilot to adjust their course North or South a bit to avoid the rocket fanatics creations.
With all the salt perhaps I should take a bag of limes and tequila to keep cool and have fun around all the explosive rocket fuel mixing. I am going to try and get started with one of the teams, perhaps I can then use the golden phrase “why yes, I am a rocket scientist”... ;-)
