Android Users – Autodesk Design Review Mobile Beta Coming

Andy the Android & Autodesk Design review Mobile BetaJust over 2 months ago (26 September 2011) I announced the Autodesk Design Review Mobile for Apple iOS devices. With Autodesk Design Review Mobile you can view your 2D and 3D DWF (Design Web Format) files anywhere on your mobile iOS device. A couple of the BTL readers asked when an Android version of the Autodesk Design Review Mobile would be available. It was a good and logical question but not one I could directly answer at the time, but I can now.  There is now an opportunity to sign up to test the beta version for your Android devices. The beta will be a pre-release version posted to get your feedback to address any reported issues before it is unleashed to freely roam the Android Market.

Don’t forget the desktop Autodesk Design Review which is also free.

What about us Blackberry guys Shaan? Will we get any love? We all know the BB Playbook is a far superior tablet to that iPile. 😉

Tim,
I am not aware of any teams working on Blackberry apps as they do not have the graphics or screen needed for most of our applications. The BB Playbook is another animal altogether as it is a tablet, Blackberry, and Android. I have been told you can load Android apps on your Playbook. It might be the only hope as I am not hearing much in the way of Blackberry Playbook specific development anywhere by anyone at this point.
I am a former Crackberry user but sadly RIM are taking a beating in the mobile device market. I am not sure what percentage of tablet market they have but would guess it is very very small.
Regards,
Shaan

True, you can load ‘Droid apps on a Playbook, IF you run the dev version of a future oS version. The release of that oS version isn’t due out till February at best. Even then, some ‘Droid apps work, some don’t. :'(
There is a dev utility out to port ‘Droid .apk files to Playbook .bar files and several places offering to help devs with that. 😉

I had seen the talk that they could load Android apps but no idea they did not allow everyone. Thats really too bad and a really short sighted & stupid move by RIM.

Is there any ETA for this? I’m super anxious, as the only Android advocate (it seems) in my company. Everyone else is all about iPad this, and iPad that…where’s the Android love? The day I got my Kindle Fire, I had it rooted and testing out current CM9 (yes, that’s ICS) builds; currently running a dual-boot of CM7 and Amazon w/ Honeycomb GUI.
It’d be nice to see these apps roll out for both OS’s at the same time, instead of Android lagging behind iOS every time; especially since Android has more devices in public hands than iOS at this point in time.

Sign up for the beta to be notified of the Android beta of Design Review.
Each team makes their decisions on platforms based on resources, technology, and market. In general development on multiple platforms can be a challenge for resources and testing and like language versions one has to be selected to focus on.

Leland Fried says:

I think I understand. Instead of putting the iOS version on the shelf while the AOSP build is in progress to release both simultaneously, you (Autodesk) would rather release one and let the other crowd grow impatient.
Makes sense.

“Sign up for the beta to be notified of the Android beta of Design Review.”
That didn’t answer my original question: “Is there any ETA for this?”

It is a one of the many decisions a product team must consider and there are many factors that can affect this decisions such as market sizes and resources. When programing for one platform at a time you need to hold one or release one first.
Also as I understand it the development and testing and market size is currently in favor of iOS. That can be partially due Tablet market at 70% iOS currently as well the testing required for all of the forked devices and derivations in Android compatible release testing as opposed to iOS devices.
No matter what platform is released first or if one was delayed there would be some that did not agree.

I am sorry but I personally do not know the exact date of release for the Design Review Beta for Android candidates. They can be added at once or added gradually based on their provided device and details.

Do we have Autodesk Design Review for the Mac OS? Cant find any reference to it on the Mac App Store.

Leland Fried says:

It’s been in Beta since December. Any news?

No firm date of release to announce as it will be released when it is ready and deemed fit for duty by all the Android users.

Leland Fried says:

I understand, that’s why I asked for news and not a release date.
Perhaps a status of how it’s doing in Beta? Better or worse than expected, high or low feedback? Maybe it was better developed than they originally thought?
I guess I’m looking for an update on the progress.

I downloaded the app for Android today

Leland Fried says:

I just received the email that it was released.
Amusing…

Yes it was just updated and released today so very fresh news indeed.
